Punjab province has reported a record wheat harvest this season, with production figures exceeding government targets by a significant margin. The provincial agriculture department announced that improved seed varieties, better irrigation access, and timely fertiliser distribution contributed to the bumper crop.
Farmers across major wheat-growing districts including Faisalabad, Multan, and Sahiwal reported yields higher than in previous years. The government’s subsidised inputs programme, which provided seeds and fertiliser to smallholder farmers, has been credited as a key driver of the success.
The surplus production is expected to ease domestic flour prices, which had climbed sharply in the preceding months due to supply chain disruptions. Authorities are also exploring export opportunities to capitalise on the surplus and earn foreign exchange.
Agricultural economists have called the harvest a much-needed relief for the national food security situation, though they cautioned that water availability and climate variability remain long-term concerns.
